Coming to the University of Florida, I knew I wanted to be involved in an organization that promoted the health of children. During my freshman fall, I applied to many organizations related to Shands volunteering with the hope of receiving an acceptance, but I was rejected and offered no interviews in this process. These were some of the first organizations I applied to at UF, and I felt very discouraged and unwanted. Although I felt defeated, I continued to try my hardest, and this perseverance allowed me to be offered positions in other various organizations. Through my time in these other spaces on campus, I learned how to apply myself, how to stand out, and how to showcase my true personality to the best of my ability.
During my sophomore year, I was offered interviews in a few of the organizations, but unfortunately, things did not play out. When I was about to give up, I applied one more time in my junior year, but was intentional and researched the organizations that were accepting new members. When I arrived at the Footprints application, I was blown away by the emphasis on family and their motto of letting "kids just be kids." I consulted friends who were part of the organization and was intentional when writing my application. I used the skills I learned in other organizations during my application and interview. My hard work paid off when I opened my phone during a family vacation and was greeted with an email that congratulated me on my acceptance. I believe everything happened for a reason as this semester gave me more time that allowed me to fully into what this organization has to offer. I have been able to meet great people who have become friends while learning about pediatric illness at the same time. For those reading, never give up and keep trying because I promise it will be so worth it. Getting that acceptance reminded me that everything happens for a reason and the right things will come to you when you need them most. Here is a picture of me with two people I met in my new member class who I call my friends now, shout-out Tammy and Abby!
